From the landmark gladiatorial arena we all know as the Colosseum to Michelangelo’s iconic painted ceiling adorning the Sistine Chapel, there is enough history and art in Rome to keep you busy for a lifetime. They say Rome wasn’t built in a day and its seemingly endless historic sights and museums are good proof! Should you find yourself wanting to experience a different aspect of the Eternal City a bit off the beaten path, I highly recommend a quick day trip over to the quaint town of Tivoli.
Situated about 18 miles east of Rome is the charming hilltop town of Tivoli. You can get there by bus or a quick one hour train ride from Roma-Tiburtina station. It offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city and instantly transports you back into time with its winding, cobblestone streets and colorful ancient buildings.
Without a doubt, the highlight of any visit to Tivoli is marveling at the picturesque Villa d’Este, a 16th century villa and UNESECO world heritage site. This luxurious Renaissance palace, with its elaborately frescoed walls and ceilings, is quite a sight to behold. The villa was built into the side of a steep hill cascading with pools, streams, waterfalls, and more than 100 gorgeous fountains. It’s stunning gardens with towering cypress, boxwood hedges, Roman statuary, and meandering paths give one ample reasons to get lost exploring the grounds for an afternoon.
When you’re done exploring the gardens, there’s usually a cute outdoor beverage cart awaiting you with plenty of refreshments and gelato. If you visit anytime in the spring or summer months, you’ll definitely be ready to take advantage of this beverage cart! Otherwise, be sure to bring some water or snacks with you.
Let’s not forget about the stunning inside of the villa! Villa d’Este is known for its gorgeous Renaissance gardens, but the inside features stunning wall-to-wall frescoes, sculptures, and the walls are adorned with a gallery of inspiring artwork.
